We need volunteers to work the race course which is in New Paltz,partly on Huguenot Street and partly on the Rail Trail. It is a wonderful community event with runners, walkers, families and children. We pride our event on safety and enthusiasm. There are prizes and it is a sanctioned event by United States Track and Field.The volunteers will be assigned locations, water stations,registration and/or wherever they are needed. Portion of Proceeds will be donated to Hospice & The Bruce Schenker Children’s Carousel Fund
The 2nd Annual Bruce Schenker Memorial 5k Run/Walk will be held in memory of Dr. Bruce Schenker, a local New Paltz community member and optometrist, who sadly passed away in June of 2007. Prior to Bruce’s passing, he had finished work on a children’s book titled “The Story of Turtle Woman & Eagle Man†– one of his last wishes was that the book would help to teach children peace, and that a portion of the proceeds of the book would go to some important charities.
Last year’s race included nearly 300 participants and raised a great deal of money. This year, the money raised will be donated to 2 important causes. The first will be the creation of the Bruce Schenker Turtle Woman & Eagle Man Children’s Carousel fund through Turtle Eagle Studios, Inc. – an organization with a mission to inspire enrichment and enhancement in the lives of children and community through creative outreach programs, events and structures that help to make a local community difference.
The Turtle Woman and Eagle Man Carousel will be the collaboration of regional artists all pooling their creative talents to represent Bruce’s story in “physical formatâ€. The 2nd Annual Run/Walk will be the first step towards the funding and ultimate creation of this carousel. It will be a tangible resource for all children to use and enjoy – a constant reminder about friendship and peace. The start of the carousel fund is the Schenker Family’s way of making sure Dr. Bruce Schenker’s wish is followed through. Along with this, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to our local Hospice Chapter, New Paltz Police Department and the New Paltz Rescue Squad.
The Bruce Schenker Memorial 5k Run/Walk will be held Saturday, June 20th, 2009. The host site will be the Gilded Otter located at 3 Main Street in New Paltz. There will be on site registration on the day of the race starting at 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM, but we strongly encourage pre-registration prior to race day. You can pre-register by clicking here.
The 5k race will begin at 9:30 AM. The race will begin at the Gilded Otter and head down Hugenot Street all the way to the Ulster Boces building. There the participants will turn around & head back toward the Gilded Otter along the beautiful New Paltz Rail Trail. The race will finish at the Gilded Otter where participants will receive a complimentary snack/drink. Race t-shirts will be provided to first 100 entrants. Made to order omelette bar from 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM. Families & children are encouraged to participate as well. Race fee is $20 for adults, $5 for children 12 and under, children under 2 are free, $5 for students with ID.
