The Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program sends out a big thank you to the 18 volunteers who came out on Saturday, June 12 to pick up trash at several of the recreational access points on the Esopus Creek in Shandaken. New York City DEP provided trash and recyclables hauling to the Olive Transfer Station.

Volunteers hauled out a pickup truck full of trash and recyclables including a shot-out barrel, a fire pit, lots of cans and bottles, and odd hunks of metal and wire. After the event, a potluck barbeque was held with live music by Peggy Atwood. “We had a great time working with everyone to clean up the garbage that so many thoughtless people simply toss away, as if our beautiful streams were nothing more than a dump,” said Volunteer and Shandaken resident, Nathan Weber.

The cleanup was sponsored by the Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program, a partnership of New York City DEP, Cornell Cooperative Extension, and Ulster County Soil and Water Conservation District.
