EVENT WILL GIVE MOTHER EARTH
A CRUCIAL SPRING CLEANING
Residents of High Falls and surrounding towns in Ulster County are invited to participate in “High Falls Green-Up Day,†a hamlet-wide clean-up effort on Saturday, April 25.
The ecological event will commemorate Earth Day 2009, held on April 22.
Volunteers are asked to meet at High Falls Café on Route 213 at the corner of Mohonk Road starting at 9am. People will be given garbage bags and assigned specific sectors of the area that need some TLC. Volunteers are urged to report for duty wearing the following clean-up clothing: long-sleeve shirts and long pants, as well as waterproof boots and extra-sturdy gloves.
“Community pride is a great thing, but we need more than lip service,†said Bill Bannan, vice-president of the High Falls Civic Association and organizer of the Green-Up. “This event is about community pride and elbow grease, an unbeatable combination. We’re all proud of beautiful High Falls, but after this Green-Up clean-up, we’ll have cause to be a whole lot prouder.â€
Targeted areas for clean-up include Route 213, Berme Road, Canal Road and Mohonk Road. Berme Road and Canal Road have been utilized as an illegal dumping area for tires, garbage, bottles, beer cans and cigarette packets for a long time, despite the presence of the High Falls Transfer Station nearby. The Green-Up Clean-up Crew will be served refreshments provided by The High Falls Café and The High Falls Civic Association.
This event is being held in conjunction with Green-Up day activities in Marbletown, which is providing the garbage bags. Collected items will be recycled where possible.
Volunteers need not sign up in advance. All are welcome on Saturday.
