A Home Within, Ulster County
ahomewithin.org
A Home Within is a national nonprofit founded to provide free psychotherapy “for as long as it takes” for any child or adult who has spent time in foster care or kinship care. Continuity in psychotherapy is important for all children and adolescents. This is especially true for children who have had disruptions in care by their family. A Home Within therapists commit to working with their child pro bono once weekly until the child no longer needs them.
AHW therapists work closely with the Ulster County Department of Social Services (DSS). Most of our clients are children or adolescents who are in kinship care or foster care. Therapists must have completed a post-graduate training in psychotherapy and be certified, licensed, or working under supervision. To support their work every therapist participates weekly in a supervision group that meets mostly on zoom. Our therapists find the experience of working with AHW clients and the supervision groups to be a rich and rewarding experience.
Volunteering with A Home Within “gave more than it took…It helped me, hands on, to be a better therapist.” Tim Rodier, AHW Volunteer Therapist and Consultation Group Leader.
In the video below Dennis McCarthy, a consultant to AHW and founder of the Metamorfos Institute, and Julie Rose and Nina Tantillo, therapist volunteers for AHW for over 10 years, share their experiences.
