Ellen G. Semel, Assistant Program Director/Life Skills Educator
Family of Woodstock, Inc./Adolescent Services
Many young people find themselves living on their own before they are emotionally and financially prepared. Others have infants while still teenagers themselves. FAMILY’s MidWay Program is designed to help young adults ages 16–21 learn to live successfully and build the skills to live independently.
Residents are accepted into the program for up to 1½ years, and those who are 16 can stay until the age of 18. All must be in school or employed full time. Residents participate in household chores, discussion groups, and individual counseling sessions. Life skill workshops cover topics such as budgeting, nutrition and cooking, parenting, communication, and employment preparation.
Counselors are available at MidWay 24 hours a day, but the emphasis is on developing independence and responsibility. Each house has strict rules about visitors, curfew, and acceptable behaviors.
