In Summer 2010, Kingston Cares implemented a community door to door survey to collect data from local residents regarding quality of life issues in Midtown Kingston. In November 2010, local residents attended a community forum to hear the results of the quality of life survey and work together to address the serious issues raised. One of the committees that were created from this forum was the Community Perceptions and Media committee. This group is working to improve the image of Midtown Kingston by addressing the often one-sided negative reporting perpetuated in the media as well as by advocating for more media attention on the amazing and unique events, places and people right here in Midtown Kingston.
One of the ways we can enhance our community is by creating articles, photographs and other content ourselves and utilizing social media and our community connections to highlight the many positive aspects of Midtown Kingston. Our first step is to develop a Facebook page to hold content relevant to Midtown Kingston. Search Facebook for “Explore Midtown Kingston†and “like†us today. We are currently in need of volunteers to serve as interviewers for articles that will be posted on this Facebook page. Volunteers will interview local business owners, residents, faith leaders, elected officials, youth and others. Strong verbal and writing skills are needed, though all content will be edited for grammar and other issues. Training on interviewing skills for volunteers will be provided. Kingston Cares is a community collaborative sponsored by Family of Woodstock, Inc. and funded by the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration through a Drug Free Communities grant. The mission of Kingston Cares is to bring all segments of the community together to prevent and reduce substance use among youth in the City of Kingston and Kingston School District.
