Sinterklaas Sendoff Celebration
Kingston Rondout Waterfront
Saturday November 29th, 2014
Drawing on the Hudson Valley’s Dutch roots, Sinterklaas in the Hudson Valley is entering the seventh year of our unique, community-built cultural event. In Holland, the birthplace of our colonial settlers, the event, “Sinterklaas” has ushered in the season of joy and sharing and created childhood memories for centuries. And in colonial times, it was the one shared celebration that took place annually in New Amsterdam (now New York). The character of Sinterklaas, based on a 4th century bishop who rescued orphans of all races and religions, has traditionally been at the center of the activities. The elements we bring together in our own Sinterklaas celebrate tolerance and diversity through varied performances and activities, while honoring children and the many talents of our local artists. Sinterklaas supports an inclusive, shared society at the holiday time among our area’s diverse populations, placing the emphasis on community.
Now taking place over two weekends in towns, Kingston and Rhinebeck, NY, the event has become a major economic boon to the area. Tourists from all over attend, thousands are now being informed on our Facebook page and through Ulster and Dutchess County Tourism. The reach goes far beyond the small towns that host it. Restaurants and merchants in the towns enjoy banner days and Sinterklaas helps keep these towns in the media and drawing tourism to the Hudson Valley year-round. As a two weekend event, approximately 6,000 – 8,000 people participate in the various activities. Crossing the Hudson River to include towns on both shores makes the community aspect of the event even more meaningful and inclusive.
Our Send-Off Celebration in Kingston needs volunteers for a number of activities including:
Performance Venues
Crowns and Branches Workshop
The “Ask Me” Tables
Attending to the Green Room where artists and volunteers come to eat and warm up
AND most of all, carrying puppets in the parade!
I hope that you might be able to participate. It is such a magical day. For more information check out our website www.sinterklaashudsonvalley.com. To volunteer contact Susie at 845-339-4280 or susielinn@verizon.net. Thank you in advance for your consideration.
