Due to the weather forecast for tomorrow (rain, wind, cold), we are re-scheduling this planting until NEXT Saturday, November 3rd. Same time (10am-1pm). We hope to see you there!
THIS Sunday (October 28th) from 2:30-5:30pm, we will install a deer fence on the site. Volunteers are welcome for this as well.
Thank you!
Come help the Kingston Land Trust Greening Group plant 70 fruit-bearing native shrubs and trees along the Esopus Creek. The plants are provided by NYSDEC’s Hudson River Estuary Program through the Trees for Tribs program.
Ven a ayudar el Greening Group del Kingston Land Trust en plantar 70 arbustos y árboles nativos que dan fruto al lado del Riachuelo Esopus. Las plantas son proveídos por el NYSDEC Hudson River Estuary Program.
This will be the first step in turning a vacant residential lot within FEMA-designated floodplain into a food-producing and pro-pollinator riparian buffer that is also a scenic, tranquil place for the public to enjoy the Esopus Creek. We are fortunate to have help from Earth Designs Cooperative in designing this site.
The Hudson Estuary Trees for Tribs Program helps to protect and restore streamside buffers. Healthy buffers, comprised of native trees, shrubs, and grasses, help to:
Reduce water pollution
Reduce erosion and flooding damage
Provide habitat for fish and other wildlife
The KLT Greening Group is a volunteer group whose goal is to increase urban food production, access to green space, ecosystem functions and beautification of spaces in and around the city and to foster a more harmonious relationship to our natural systems. The group will implement projects including ecological landscaping, gardening, farming, permaculture, edible forest gardens / orchards, ecological land management, and green infrastructure on community-oriented properties in and around Kingston that are either owned by, managed by or in partnership with the Kingston Land Trust. The group will have the benefit of receiving technical and design support from the Kingston Land Trust Community Design Workgroup and other experts from the community and sister organizations.
Examples of other projects in and around Kingston:
- Creating a community space at a historical site in Ponckhockie
- Planting the new Hasbrouck-Delaware Parklet
- Converting vacant lots into urban pollinator gardens
- South Pine Street City Farm ecological landscaping
