If you’ve ever wanted to learn about amateur (“ham”) radio, it’s time to do something about it!
This class gives you everything you need to pass the written examination for a Technician Class amateur radio license. Saturday is a full day of learning sessions and demonstrations. Sunday morning finishes the class and prepares you for the exam. On Sunday afternoon, you take the exam – if you pass, you’ll leave as a licensed ham radio operator!
Amateur radio is famous as the one communication method that works when all else fails. In a disaster, when electricity, telephones, cell phones, and the Internet are all down, amateur radio can still get the message through.
The Technician Class license gives you the privileges you need to communicate in a disaster. It’s perfect for emergency responders, survivalists, and anyone else who wants to be prepared for anything. It’s also the starting point for more advanced licenses that add more technical knowledge, world-wide communications options, and fun to the hobby.
No prior experience is needed, there is no minimum (or maximum) age limit, and you’ll never be required to learn Morse code.
Your instructor is the ARES Emergency Coordinator and RACES Radio Officer for Ulster County, and an ARRL-certified Emergency Communications instructor.
The cost for the weekend is $30, which includes refreshments, handouts, and the examination fee. You will also need a copy of the textbook, “Technician Class 2014-2018” by Gordon West. The book is available from amazon.com and other online bookstores.
