Be a Volunteer at the new Maurice D. Hinchey Catskill Interpretive Center. The Center is located at 5096 Route 28 in Mount Tremper, NY. Volunteers will be integral to the operation of the Center, welcoming visitors and providing information.
As a volunteer you will have the opportunity to represent the Catskills and to share your knowledge of our history, heritage, natural resources, culture, art, fun things to do and amazing things to see. Catskill Interpretive Center visitors may come in looking for info about amenities or for directions; you will have the opportunity to make that special first impression that tells a visitor they are welcome. We want each visitor to leave the Interpretive Center having learned something new and wonderful about the Catskills. Volunteers will be interpreters and docents who know the Catskill region and can guide and direct visitors to their destinations while also suggesting other possible places to go.
It is our goal to have the Catskill Interpretive Center open to the public 7 days a week. There is a group of local nonprofits that comprise the Operating Group. The facility is owned by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and they have contracted with the Catskill Center for Conservation and Development to be the lead organization managing the operations of the Interpretive Center. The Catskill Center and the other Operating Group partners will provide a staff person who will be responsible for operations on any given day of the week. The staff person will look to volunteers to assist in helping visitors.
Volunteering is an exciting, satisfying and worthwhile activity. We will work very hard to make the volunteer experience both enjoyable and rewarding. You will feel appreciated by visitors and the Operating Group.
We need to know what kind of a commitment you are willing to make. The Interpretive Center will be open 7 days a week from 9AM until 5PM. We need to know that in addition to a staff person the schedule is covered by at least one volunteer at all times. Can you make a full day commitment? To Which day of the week are you willing to commit? How long a commitment are you comfortable in making? ( Say, once a week for three months? Or weekends in July and August? Or every day for the next 6 months? – What works for you?)
We will provide a volunteer/staff manual that will detail responsibilities and will contain all you need to know to be an effective Catskill Interpretive Center volunteer. We will also provide training so you will be familiar with the facilities, the duties and most circumstances that may arise while volunteering.
