Catskill Animal Sanctuary is having a spring clean up on Saturday, April 10th, 2010, 10-4:30. Roll up your sleeves on behalf of our animal friends. We’ll be painting, landscaping, raking and more. Lunch provided by our fabulous chef Kevin Archer, so come hungry! Please arrive on time for a brief welcome and orientation, as we’re expecting huge numbers of folks and will unfortunately be unable to accommodate late arrivals. Rain Date: Saturday, April 17. CAS is a bustling place with 30 horses, 20 cows, 15 pigs, and over 100 smaller animals. We’ve got GREAT volunteer support but could use even more hands! If you love animals, are in good physical shape, and enjoy hard work, there’s no greater place to be a part of. Come assist with cleaning, feeding, turnout, barn management, and other daily chores.
Located two hours from New York City, Catskill Animal Sanctuary is a safe and loving haven for abused and abandoned horses and farm animals. Since 2001, CAS has provided refuge for about 1,400 such animals, including horses, ponies, cows, goats, sheep, donkeys, pigs, rabbits, and a variety of birds.
So few speak out on behalf of farm animals – animals who suffer no differently than dogs, cats, or humans. Rarely, if ever, do most of us even consider their plight. Catskill Animal Sanctuary serves as a refuge for these needy animals and as a center to raise awareness of their mistreatment and its impact on all of us: animals, humans, and the environment.
Our volunteer program allows us to help more animals! We have over 100 volunteers who assist with everything from mucking stalls to stuffing envelopes to web programming.
Volunteer Opportunities:
Animal Care: Assist our staff with the daily care routine of 12 farm animal species. Activities include mucking stalls, cleaning small animal shelters, filling water buckets, providing fresh hay & bedding, cleaning large animal run-in buildings and pastures. This position is very physical and chores take place outside in all weather conditions. Volunteers should be physically fit and able to lift 35lbs. Expect to get dirty!
Farm Maintenance: Assist our staff with routine maintenance chores such as fence repair, painting, lawn mowing, raking, and vehicle maintenance. Activities vary seasonally and may include building projects or other skilled maintenance tasks (i.e. plumbing, oil changes, etc.) depending on the skills and experience of the volunteer.
Administrative: Assist with routine office tasks such as filing, correspondence, and copying. Volunteers also assist with bulk mailing projects and event preparation. Depending on the volunteer’s skill level and experience, they may also assist with research projects and web 2.0 updates.
Outreach: Help maintain our presence in the community by supplying businesses with CAS brochures. Volunteers who have extensive knowledge of CAS and our residents may be asked to staff tables at expos, community events, festivals, and conferences
Education: Conduct educational tours on weekends and staff our Welcome Hut. This volunteer opportunity is by invitation only, but please let us know if this type of work interests you.
Events & Fundraising: Work with members of our board to plan special events. Specific tasks may include obtaining donated items for silent auction and obtaining donated goods & services for events. May include additional tasks and responsibilities depending on volunteer experience and community contacts.
Special Skills: If you have a special talent and would like to donate your services, please let us know. Examples: graphic design, CPA, equine massage, mechanic, veterinary services.
