KINGSTON – Nearly four tons of litter were cleaned from the streets by more than 300 volunteers as part of the Kingston Clean Sweep on Saturday, April 24. Volunteers from over 20 local service organizations and the community-at-large picked up litter from 9 a.m. to noon from the Thruway Circle to the Strand in Rondout as part of the event sponsored by the Friends of Historic Kingston with support from the City of Kingston.
In addition to the “Kingston Corridor” which runs through uptown and down Broadway to Rondout, everyl street in the Stockade District and many side streets in Rondout, the Academy Green and several parking lots were also cleared of litter and swept. Bags were donated by the City of Kingston, work gloves by Herzogs and the Queens Galley, and neon green T-shirts for the volunteers’ safety by Anaconda Sports and Herzogs. The organizers hope that this first city-wide Clean Sweep was a legacy event that will be continued.
