SUNY New Paltz and the Institute for Disaster Mental Health will be hosting an all-day American Red Cross event on Saturday, February 20th, 2010 from 9:00AM-5:00PM in Lecture Center, Room 108. This event will train community members and potential volunteers in basic Red Cross disaster services. The courses will serve as an introduction to the Red Cross; will discuss the roles and responsibilities of Mass Care workers; and will explain how to effectively set up, run, and close shelters while meeting the needs of people displaced as a result of a disaster. Those who complete all three courses will be qualified to volunteer whenever an emergency shelter is needed, and you can also learn about other opportunities for volunteering with your local Red Cross chapter.
The following is a tentative schedule for the day:
9:00-9:30AM – Introduction
9:30-12:30 – Fulfilling Our Mission, Mass Care Overview
12:30-1:30 – Lunch, provided by the IDMH
1:30-5:00 – Shelter Operations
This training opportunity is not limited to the SUNY New Paltz community – all are invited to register for this free event, but you must sign up in advance. To register for this event, please contact the Ulster County Chapter of the American Red Cross at (845) 338-7020.
Please pass the attached flyer on to other interested community members including family, friends and neighbors! Let’s all get trained to make sure New Paltz is ready to respond should disaster strike here.
