Woodstock Day School students team up with Cornell Cooperative Extension Ulster County
Student volunteers from the Woodstock Day School will learn skills that include scientific research, office management, data collection with global positioning systems (GPS) units, gardening, and theatre arts during a special week-long community services program during March 22 to March 26.
The student volunteer services program is in coordination with the Cornell Cooperative Extension Ulster County. Students will be working with the Ulster County Office of Tourism, the Master Gardener program, A Healthy Kingston for Kids project, the Kingston Land Trust, and the Relatives As Parents Program (RAPP) Ulster County, among others.“This is an opportunity for youth to engage in an experience that may spark an interest in activities such as conducting research, running a business office and sustainable gardening techniques,†said Danielle Garris, Program Coordinator of RAPP.
Student volunteers will spend one day with each program or Project Coordinator working on a variety of tasks. The week-long project is part of a year-long community services program at the Woodstock Day School, said Leith Rogovin, Community Services Director at the school.
“Community services week is part of a larger effort aimed at helping students learn about a community, making them more conscious of where they live and helping them learn what makes up a community,†Rogovin said adding that students volunteer their time year-round at various community organizations in the region such as the Queen’s Galley soup kitchen and the Catskill Animal Sanctuary.
