RECRUITING COMMUNITY FUND VOLUNTEERS!!!!
WANT TO LEARN MORE ABOUT YOUR COMMUNITY?
WANT TO HELP UNITED WAY DISTRIBUTE COMMUNITY FUNDS?
United Way of Ulster County is looking for volunteers to review 2011 requests for funding from local agencies, and make recommendations to its Board of Directors
United Way of Ulster County receives 60+ requests for funding each year, allocating $500,000 to local programs providing childcare, vocational education, housing, mental health, literacy, substance abuse prevention, and parenting education services. With only three staff, we rely on a large team of Community Fund volunteers to help us. Volunteers review funding requests, meet with agency personnel, and develop recommendations for funding to the United Way’s Board of Directors, which are approved in June 2011.
Do I need any particular experience?
NO. Training is provided, and committees are purposely blended to include community members with a variety of backgrounds and interests. If you do have a partciular interest in a service area, let us know in your Community Fund Volunteer Information Sheet, and we’ll make every effort to place you on a committee focused on that area.
How much time will this take?
The time commitment includes approximately four to six meetings over a two-month period (April-May). Meetings last approximately 2 hours each, and are scheduled considering the availability of all committee members (usually towards the end of the workday).
Volunteers also need to familiarize themselves with requests for funding prior to meetings, averaging 2 hours/week of reading.
There is also a required training for new volunteers on Tuesday, March 15 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Business Resource Center, 1 Development Court, Kingston, NY. Training will cover the mechanics of proposal review including program operations, program evaluation, staffing, and budgeting.
What if I’m a staff member or volunteer of a United Way member agency?
Because of the nature of this volunteer position, Community Fund Volunteers cannot be staff members of any United Way member agency. Please review the list of present United Way member agencies on the “Partners” tab of our website, www.uwuc.org.
If you are a board member, spouse of a staffor board member, an ex-staff member, or a volunteer of a United Way member agency, you may participate, however, you must recuse yourself from any deliberations or discussions related to that agency.
If I’m interested in becoming a Community Fund Volunteer, what do I do next?
Based on the above criteria, if you feel you are able to become a Community Fund Volunteer, please download and complete the Community Fund Volunteer Information Sheet, and return it to Stacey Rein by Friday, March 11, 2011 via email, fax to 845-331-4789, or send regular mail to:
