Volunteer gardeners are needed to help out with the Thomas Chambers Community Garden located on City of Kingston property across from the Rondout Plaza at 100 Murray St, early mornings or evenings, any day of the week, including weekends. Donations of mulch, compost, manure or wood chips are also needed.
To volunteer, for more information about the garden or to apply for a plot, contact Maria Lazo at 845-338-2408.
The residents are very enthusiastic and many of the children planted their own pumpkin patch. Maria Lazo, a Rondout resident with enthusiastic interest and experience in gardening, is the garden steward. Lazo has developed a garden plan with assistance from three of Cornell Cooperative Extension Ulster County’s Master Gardener volunteers. Free garden plots for vegetable cultivation will be available to residents of the area. The plan includes use of perennial plants such as blueberries and pear trees.
In 2012, the HKK Gardens Committee, led by Julie Noble, Environmental Educator at Kingston Parks and Recreation Department, conducted a systematic analysis of open land in the City of Kingston’s food deserts to determine the best locations for a community garden. Committee members used mapping technology, field visits, and community outreach to find a location where lower-income residents in food deserts would be best served by a community garden project. The Rondout location was the committee’s number one choice.
