RVGA PAPER PUMPKIN PROJECT
A grass-roots fundraiser for Rondout Valley post-flood farm relief
Thousands of pumpkins were washed into the frothing waters of the Rondout and Esopus Creeks after Tropical Storms Irene and Lee swept through the Rondout Valley in late August. But pumpkins were far from the only crop damaged on local farms. The flooding and days of pelting rain severely damaged all kinds of local produce, farm soils and infrastructure at the worst possible time of year—the time when harvest crops pay off farmer’s start-of-season loans. Farmer and RVGA President Bruce Davenport came up with the idea to sell a pumpkin hangtag as a way to fund a disaster relief account to distribute to hard-hit local farmers, and artist and RVGA board member Maria Reidelbach offered to create one. The pumpkins are available through Thanksgiving at Rondout Valley farmstands, including Barthel’s, Burd’s, Kelder’s, Saunderskill, Davenport Farms, R.O. Davenport in Kingston, and Gill’s, at local farmer’s markets, at Westwind and Stone Ridge Orchards, at various businesses region-wide, and on the RVGA website. Volunteers are needed to help expand this wonderful project into local schools. If you can help email volunteer@ulstercorps.org or RSVP here.
New Paltz FLOOD AID Farmers, Families, & First Responders BENEFIT CONCERT
Sunday, October 16th, 12pm-6pm @ Hasbrouck Park
Volunteers needed for both events and for gathering donations from local businesses, suitable for a raffle. Gift certificates, items, etc. On the day of the event, to keep things simple, we’d prefer if people can do a 7 hour shift, 10 to 5. The gates open at 11AM, but we’ll need you there at 10 to get things squared away. I realize this is a long time so we will also be breaking it up into 2 shifts lasting about 4 hours each (10:00 to 2 and 1:30 to 5:00). As of right now it will be ticket sales and will call we need help with. We are also looking for a big organization to volunteer to do clean-up.
