The Queens Galley brings Share Our Strength’s Operation Frontline to area
Farmers’ Markets
Press Release, Kingston, NY. August 30, 2009
The Queens Galley Food Insecurity Resource Center in Kingston is
partnering with area Farmers’ Markets in Kingston, Woodstock, Ellenville
and Rhinebeck to bring Share Our Strength’s Operation Frontline directly
to those markets.
Operation Frontline is a ground breaking hands-on culinary nutrition
education class series brought to the Hudson Valley by The Queens Galley.
The classes are taught by volunteer chefs and nutrition educators to help
participants learn to create healthy great tasting meals on a limited
budget.
Operation Frontline partners with organizations around the nation.
Kingston’s Queens Galley is one of twenty such partners. According to
Share Our Strength’s annual report for 2008 over 500 series were taught in
more than 340 community sites offering courses to 6700 participants. 85%
of participants graduate from the series and 94% of adult participants now
use the nutrition facts label on foods to make food choices.
This Farmers’ Market series is the first of its kind for Operation
Frontline. Queens Galley director, Diane Reeder has been a vocal advocate
of Hudson Valley farm markets and has worked to strengthen the connection
between low income consumers and locally produced food. This Operation
Frontline series marks a collaboration to bring farm fresh food to low
income tables between the farmer, community markets, low income consumers
and the culinary world. “Not only will we be able to teach these kids how
to cook the food on site but they will be able to meet the growers, ask
questions and witness firsthand the seasonality of Hudson Valley Produceâ€
says Reeder. For the markets, having Operation Frontline serves more than
just an opportunity to reach out to new consumers but the classes double
task as chef demonstrations as well. The Ellenville class starting August
30, 11am-1pm is scheduled to be taught by Marcus Guiliano, Executive
chef/owner of Aroma Thyme Bistro, which has been open since 2003 and has
been honored with a Wine Spectator Award, 25 food rating from Zagat and
more. Each class pairs the chef with a nutrition educator. Ellenville’s
partner is Lori Hessinger who specializes in reflexology. Hessinger, LPN,
HHC is a nurse, reflexologist, as well as a Holistic Health Educator. She
graduated from the Institute of Integrative Nutrition in Manhattan and was
certified by the American Association of Drugless Practitioners. As a
practicing nurse, Lori draws upon her nurturing and educating nature to
assist patients with many addictions and disorders. Lori has also created
Natures Choice, her own health counseling business. She offers lectures
as well as individual and group counseling sessions to clients of all ages
and stages of life.
The classes are free to participants, children ages 8-12. Pre-registration
is necessary and space is extremely limited. For those who cannot secure a
space in the series they can always opt to watch the class from the open
air sidelines at the markets and then of course sample the menu selections
prepared each day.
