What is a Hunger Banquet?
Few experiences bring to life the inequalities in our world more powerfully than an Oxfam Hunger Banquet event. Unique and memorable, The Hunger Banquet event allows participants to experience firsthand how our decisions affect others in the world.
Upon arrival our guests draw tickets at random that assign them each to either a high-, middle-, or low-income tier-based on the latest statistics about the number of people living in poverty. Each income level receives a corresponding meal. The first 15 percent represent those living in the high- income tier and are served a sumptuous meal catered by celebrated chef Samir Hrichi of Ship to Shore; the next 35 percent represent the largest demographic addressing hunger and food insecurity in our own community; our children. These guests will dine on an offering from the Kingston Consolidated school lunch menu; and the remaining guests, representing the 50% of the world population facing hunger and poverty daily, help themselves to small portions of rice and water. Although all guests pay the same price for admission, as in life we never know how fate is decided.
In addition we have asked businesses and residents of Kingston to lend us their support in a show of solidarity on that one day by placing a sign in their windows stating “Hunger is Not an Option”. This one day we show the world that indeed we work together as a community and every man; woman and child in our neighborhoods will have access to food. Hunger is not an option. YOU can download a pdf of this sign for your window by clicking this link, or by picking up the MARCH issue of Chronogram for a full page tear out to place in your window!
Our guest speaker: Guest speaker: Sarah Copeland, chef, author and food stylist comes to
us to talk about connecting people to food. Catch Sarah’s blog at

Caterer: Chef Samir Hrichi from the acclaimed Ship to Shore

Because at this Banquet, you are not guaranteed to be among those that will have a full tasting menu, we urge you to make reservations for a “real” dinner at one of the participating restaurants in the Kingston area for after the Banquet. All of the listed places will be donating a portion of their sales from that day. We urge you to support us as we try to end hunger, one meal at a time!!!
When you do dine out please remember these fine places that give back to our community, choose to spend your dollars wisely 🙂 And when you do dine at one of our supporting partners please let them know we send our regards and gratitude for helping to feed the Hudson Valley…one meal at a time!
