Across 50 states, more than 7000 female volunteers are pounding nails and raising walls at over 200 Habitat home construction sites. Women Build is a national initiative of Habitat for Humanity International, and is sponsored by Lowe’s. Habitat Newburgh is thrilled to be participating in this exciting national movement, and has already received a $5,000 gift card from Lowe’s to purchase needed construction materials.
152 Washington Street will be a new home for a local, working family in need at the former site of “Big Mamma’s Soul Food Kitchen”, which had been abandoned and boarded up for over 20 years. Site and Construction Manager Lisa Biggin overcame a unique challenge with this particularly narrow lot by designing a 2-story, 2-bedroom home that will measure 12′ wide x 60′ deep.
Volunteers will be led by House Captains Celeste Bloomer, Nancy Rathbun, and Cornelia Gallagher. In order to qualify for Women Build, the volunteer team should be 80% female. (Don’t worry, guys, you’re not excluded!!)
Volunteers are welcome on site every Wednesday and Saturday from 8am to 1pm, rain or shine, at several different active construction site locations. To find out about our currently active sites, visit our current projects page. To sign-up to volunteer on a workday, please click here.
NOTICE: ALL SITES WILL BE CLOSED ON SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 28, 2009
Individuals and groups are welcome, but if your group has 5 or more people, please call the office beforehand at (845) 568-6035 x102.
Thank you for your interest in making a difference in your community. We look forward to seeing you on site!
