OUR MISSION
- To transform our throw-away economy, one beloved item at a time
- To reduce how much stuff goes into the waste stream
- To preserve traditional repair know-how & skills, and pass them on
- To show the people who have this knowledge that they are valued
- To feed our curiosity about “the way things work”, provide scientific diversion & have fun!
- To foster community, sustainability, and resilience
The Repair Café idea was born in Amsterdam in 2009 and was brought to New Paltz by volunteer organizer John Wackman in 2013. His dedication, enthusiasm, and success inspired others to launch Repair Cafe events in their communities. If you are interested in bringing Repair Cafe to your community, John would be happy to point you in the right direction (email John). You can also check out the Repair Cafe Foundation, where it all began, for resources, guidelines, and all the details.
Bring your beloved but broken item to the heart of Woodstock and together, with a volunteer Repair Coach, fix it… for FREE!
Things to bring: lamps, small appliances, dull knives for sharpening, electronics and digital devices, clothing items, toys, chairs and other things made of wood, jewelry.
Our tool and knife sharpener (Kirk) will be with us – he was even inspired to buy a new tool!
Once again, Saugerties author Vernon Benjamin will offer “wordsmithing” for any type of writing, letter or document brought to him.
New this time: Knit Repairs and Darning.
We are in need of a clothing & textiles repair coach, ideally with a sewing machine. Could that be you??
In addition to repairs, one of our jewelry repair coaches has a gold and silver polishing tumbler for small items (not chains).
Note: We do not offer bicycle repairs.
So please come & bring a friend! Learn how to fix things yourself. Sit and watch, sit and chat, get to know your neighbors. Most things get fixed, and even when they don’t, we have a good time & learn a lot!
Do you have any questions? Do you want to bring something you’re not sure we can repair? Please get in touch with us ahead of time. repaircafe@woodstock.org or (845) 679-4862.
