Organization Overview
Founded in 1988 by a dedicated group of local citizens, WLC is a non-profit organization with a
small staff and an all-volunteer board of directors. At its core, WLC is an ever-growing community
of dedicated and generous volunteers, supporters, and community members who share a passionate
love and respect for the land and the unique place we live. Together we pursue land conservation
goals as well as initiatives to create and manage preserves, protect water resources, adapt to and
mitigate the effects of climate change, support sustainability, and promote appropriate land use in
the communities we serve.
Position Overview
Woodstock Land Conservancy seeks a summer land steward volunteer intern for a part-time
internship equalling 15-20 hours per week. The land steward intern will assist the Stewardship
Manager, working collaboratively and independently. Primary activities will include field work and
office work. Field work will include invasive plant species management and trail
maintenance/creation. Office work will include scanning/copying, writing, GIS (Geographic
Information System) mapping. Candidates must be self-directed, independent, team minded,
energetic. WLC’s office is based in Woodstock, NY.
Duties
Field Work (60%)
● Manage invasive species
● Maintain Trees for Tribs project site
● Perform trail maintenance & trail creation
● Maintain boundary signs
● Inspect properties
● Maintain trailhead kiosks
● Monitor trail cameras
● Assist education programming, tabling
● Perform other tasks as assigned by the Stewardship Manager
Office (40%)
● Copying/Scanning
● Drafting stewardship documents
● arcGIS mapping
● Organizing files
● Social media content creation
● Perform other tasks as assigned by the Stewardship Manager
Candidate Requirements:
1. Ability to conduct field work in rugged terrain
2. Ability to work independently outdoors
Preferred Qualifications:
1. Enrollment in or completion of Bachelor’s degree in ecology, natural resource management or
related fields
2. Knowledge of invasive species identification and management
3. Knowledge of flora and fauna of New York
4. Knowledge of GPS/GIS
Hours
This is a volunteer position with a 15-20-hour week (Tentative schedule: Tuesday, Thursday, ½ day
Friday, occasional weekends with notice). Generally 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Internship will be
approximately 11 weeks long. Typical date range is on or around June 3, 2024 – August 16, 2024.
Housing is not provided. Personal transportation required.
This internship will be open until filled, and interviews will be held on a rolling basis as applications
are received. Eligible for college/university internship credit.
