What is a Bio Blitz?
A BioBlitz is an intense period of biological surveying in an attempt to record all the living species within a designated area. Groups of scientists, naturalists and volunteers conduct an intensive field study over a continuous time period (usually 24 hours). The collected data will be used to inform how we use the site over the years to come.
Thorn Preserve (located at 55 John Joy Road, Woodstock, NY) is 60 acres of largely open space with 10 acres of woodland bordering the Sawkill creek. Scientists from varying areas of expertise will study and catalog their findings.
We are seeking interested volunteers (of High School age and older) to participate for a 4 hours (or longer) to assist the Scientists. This is a great opportunity to explore the ecological diversity and biological interaction of a single site over a 36 hour period – as well as gain knowledge of the scientific process first hand. We will conduct field work Friday morning through Saturday afternoon – presenting findings to the public on Saturday afternoon.
No experience is necessary to participate in this program, just a curiosity and love of nature.
Some areas of study will include: birds, mammals, insects, woody plants, herbacious plants, grasses,
fish/aquatics, invasives, soil/geology, moss, butterflies/moths.
We will provide refeshments and snacks.
We ask that you bring a bag lunch and provide your own transportation.
