HELP STOP HUNGER IN ULSTER COUNTY
On Saturday, May 12, 2018, in conjunction with the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United States Postal Service, the United Way of Ulster County, and the Kingston Post Office are coordinating a countywide food drive to collect food for local food pantries.
“Over 13 million or 1 in 6 children is living in a food insecure household,” reports Su Marcy, United Way Vice President. “Going into the summer season is a challenge for families with children home from school who would normally take advantage of school meal programs. As a result, pantries traditionally see an increase in demand over the summer months,” she said. Last year’s food drive brought in 4,500 pounds of food that was distributed to 12 Ulster County food pantries. This year’s goal is to collect 7,500 pounds of food.
You can help by leaving non-perishable food items such as pasta, rice, dry milk, cereal, peanut butter, and canned fruit/meat/vegetables (please NO glass containers), for your letter carrier on Saturday, May 13th or by bringing donations to your local post office.
Food pantries wishing to participate must contact Su Marcy, United Way of Ulster County, 845-331-4199, x2 or sumarcy@ulsterunitedway.org, prior to May 12th. Local civic organizations wishing to make donations should contact Mike Bachor, Kingston Post Office, 845-331-2286.
Volunteers (age 16+) also needed at the Kingston Post Office, 90 Cornell St, from 3pm until approximately 6pm & to help deliver donations to Family’s shelters once all the donated items have been sorted, boxed and weighed. Volunteers with pickups trucks who can help with distribution especially needed. Please also bring boxes, tape, black markers with you if you can. To volunteer, please register below, email volunteer@ulstercorps.org, or call/text 845-481-0331. Thank you!
