As Hurricane Matthew bears down on the southern East Coast of the United States, the American Red Cross is on the ground, offering shelter and preparing to deliver more extensive relief services in the coming days and weeks. Already, fifteen Red Cross volunteers from the Eastern New York Region have been deployed to support the response in Florida and the Carolina’s, and more volunteers are needed now.
The American Red Cross will hold a one-day volunteer workshop on Tuesday, October 11 to train prospective shelter workers for deployment. Volunteers must be willing and able to serve in a disaster-affected area for a minimum of 10 days beginning Wednesday, October 12. The Red Cross will cover all training and travel costs for individuals who are deployed.
If you are not currently a Disaster Cycle Services Volunteer, but would like to be one, we would love to see you here for the training!
If you are a current Disaster Cycle Services Member who does not have an assigned Group, Activity Position (GAP), and need either the Disaster Cycle Services An Overview Course and/or Shelter Fundamentals Course, please feel free to register for attendance or reach out to your local DPM for further details.
The volunteer workshop will be held from 8:30 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. on Tuesday, October 11 at the American Red Cross of Northeastern New York, located at 33 Everett Road in Albany. Interested participants may register online, or contact Brian Vance at (315) 679-6438 or Brian.Vance@redcross.org for more information.
On Thursday, more than 27,000 people in Hurricane Matthew’s path spent the night in evacuation shelters. The number of shelters and people seeking help is expected to grow as Matthew moves up the coast. The Red Cross already has more than 500 disaster workers and 90 response vehicles on the ground in Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, with more on the way.
We look forward to seeing you!
