Five volunteers are needed to help select and pack children’s books for Mustard Seeds, a nonprofit program that sends gently used books to under-resourced schools, libraries and community centers in northwest New Mexico. Meet on Sunday, September 27, at 2:15 pm at the Elting Library parking lot in New Paltz.
Starting in 2003 over 11,000 books and other learning materials have been delivered to under-resourced schools and community centers in the Espanola area of northern New Mexico where educational resources are lacking. Making good books available to young students can help build a foundation for learning and growth, and can help support the involvement of parents in their children’s education. Through the gift of books, Mustard Seeds seeks to open new worlds to children, to strengthen literacy skills and to encourage reading in schools, community centers and at home. Among recipients are Ohkay Owingeh (San Juan Pueblo School), the Santa Clara Day School, La Tierra Montessori School of the Arts and Sciences, and Native American community centers and libraries.
