This course is designed to provide basic knowledge and tools for emergency communications volunteers. It covers topics such as how communications fit into the response framework, communication networks, handling messages, response strategies, communication alternatives, and operational considerations.
The course is designed for Amateur Radio operators, but the material is also applicable to anyone with communications responsibilities in an emergency response environment. An amateur radio license is not required for this course.
Your instructor is the ARES Emergency Coordinator and RACES Radio Officer for Ulster County, and an ARRL-certified Emergency Communications instructor.
Course prerequisites:
Before attending this course, you must successfully complete two DHS/FEMA mini-courses
available at no charge at http://training.fema.gov/IS/NIMS.asp:
– IS-100.b, Introduction to ICS
– IS-700, National Incident Management System
The cost for the weekend is $30, which includes refreshments, handouts, and the examination
fee. Pre-registration is required. The registration deadline is December 9. To register, or to get
