THANKSGIVING DAY DINNER IN WOODSTOCK
Community is what Family of Woodstock brings together during its annual free Thanksgiving Day dinner. Family’s 42nd Thanksgiving dinner will be open to all on Thursday, November 22nd from 1PM to 4PM at the Mescal Hornbeck Community Center on Rock City Road. People unable to get to the dinner may request take home packages which are prepared at 4:00 PM for pick up or delivery. Last year, Family served more than six hundred people on Thanksgiving with the help of dozens of cooks, restaurants and volunteer servers.
Six hundred people can create a lot of garbage. In an effort to lower the carbon footprint, Family is also proud to announce its collaboration once again with Zero to Go, an education-based waste management company that focuses on composting and recycling. Last year, thanks to Zero to Go, Family was left with just three bags of trash. This Thanksgiving will also be the first ever dinner where no plastic cutlery will be used. Family’s community-wide “Knife, Fork, and Spoon Drive” yielded enough real silverware for all to use.
It is with the generous support of local businesses and individuals that Family provides a bountiful feast. But, it is the donation of freshly prepared foods delivered hot on Thanksgiving morning that warms the souls of all who come. Family needs turkeys (and cookers) and lots of vegetarian options, too. Volunteers are also needed to help set up, serve and clean up, as well as drivers who can pick up donations on Wednesday from the many area restaurants, food stores, and bakeries that contribute to the dinner each year.
Family believes that the common ground which unites us, both helper and helped, is greater than the differences which divide us, and that everyone deserves the respect and support of our larger community. This special day brings together long-time Woodstockers, new friends, and neighbors from Saugerties, Kingston and Phoenicia. Everyone is welcome to come eat or volunteer (sign up in advance required) as we give thanks and take part in the wonderful community we live in
If you are interested in helping, please contact Family immediately as planning for this big celebration is already underway. To donate, to volunteer, or for further information, call Family at 845-679-2485. A volunteer will be happy to help you sign up for a shift or note what deliciousness you will make for Thanksgiving this year.
