Tree Steward Program to be offered in October
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ulster County’s (CCEUC) will be sponsoring a Tree Steward program in October. This is a volunteer program designed to help local residents, tree commissions and municipalities learn how to better care for their urban trees and learn about invasive pests like the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB).
The program will be held on October 29 and 30 at the CCEUC Education Center located at 232 Plaza Road in Kingston from 9:30am-3:30pm. The course fee is $25 for both days and will include lunch. Participants will learn the biology of trees, how to care for trees and diagnose problems and pruning training for young trees. Mark Whitmore from Cornell University will be teaching about the Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) and its effects in our region.
People should be prepared to go outside for the hands on learning sessions. Tree Stewards will become a Cornell volunteer and expected to perform 10 hours of volunteer time in community service. Some of the volunteer activities will include:
· Advising the selection, planting, pruning, mulching and watering of public street trees and trees in parks and other public places.
· Help with assessment of EAB damage and threat to ash trees in Ulster County.
· Leading neighborhood Tree Walks and speaking at community gatherings
