We volunteers serve a lunch meal on Saturday and Sunday dinner, around 10-12 every weekend. We are always in need of volunteers, people to pick up, and to augment services.

Good news for students on the Ulster Literacy Association waiting list! Eleven will soon be matched with a one-to-one tutor from ULA’s tuto training program. Enrollment in the program was greatly boosted by UlsterCorps Volunteers and the Martin Luther King Day Call to Service. ULA’s next tutor training begins on April 18. Each tutor is then matched with an adult learner who wants to improve reading and writing skills.

Project Coat Update & Thank You!
Yesterday, February 9, 2009 UlsterCorps volunteers picked up over 800 youth ski jackets from a warehouse in NJ and delivered them to service agencies throughout Ulster County including Family, Planned Parenthood, Rural & Migrant Ministry, Harbor Program of MHA in Ulster, River Haven, and the Saugerties & Kingston Boys & Girls Clubs. Thank you so much to Judy Ward of Alpha 6 Distributions, LLC, for your incredibly generous donation, and to Ilene, Paula, Ruth, Max, Rik, Beth, Nancy, Will & Paavo for being a part of this great day and helping to bring a new, warm coat to so many children.

Ulster County Habitat for Humanity seeks a Secretary for the Board of Directors. This is a volunteer position that involves both secretarial and management skills. The Secretary is a member of the Executive Committee as well. The Board meets on the second Tuesday evening of each month and Executive Committee meetings are called when needed. Rosendale Street Festival Fundraiser
On Saturday, 14th of March from 12 noon until 10:00 p.m., the volunteer led committee of the The Rosendale Street Festival (http://RosendaleStreetFestival.com) will hold a fundraiser to save The Rosendale Street Festival being dubbed as “The Winter Fest” with live music from Dog on Fleas, The Virginia Wolves, Voodelic, The Trapps and more. This event will be held at The Rosendale Recreation Center, 1055 Route 32, Rosendale, NY. The Street Festival itself is slated for the 18th and 19th of July if fundraising efforts are successful.
The Street Festival is a not-for-profit organization run by grassroots citizens for the purpose of continuing the legendary Rosendale Street Festival. The festival is intended for the multiple benefits it offers to the community and the Mid-Hudson Valley as a whole. It is a volunteer effort on the part of both the musicians and organizers: “1 Street, 2 Days, 5 Stages, 74 Bandsâ€.
The schedule of activities is as follows:

2pm Yarrow
3pm Studio Stu and the Rosendale Hula Hoopers

Volunteers needed for the Rondout Valley Growers Association (RVGA) 6th Annual Orchard Dinner and Wine Tasting. The event will be taking place on Saturday, June 27th at the Stone Ridge Orchard. Volunteers are needed for set up, clean up and the serving of the meal. All volunteers will receive a RVGA T-Shirt. The RVGA is a non-profit community organization comprised of local farmers, residents, and businesses that are committed to strengthening the region’s family farms and preserving open space for future generations. The road takes 3 hours to complete and we need to complete the work before the grass grows, usually by May 6. Timing is flexible and we will arrange the times when we hear from you.

During the six years that I was Program Coordinator for Ulster Literacy Association, I never saw anything like the shot of adrenaline that our tutor enrollment received from UlsterCorps. During the tutor training, I would address groups of 12 or 15 volunteers, where a year before we would have had three or four.

Working together, networking Farmers, Food, Farms….Processing plant for local food ..Rondout Valley Growers efforts… planning… implementation….. canning…. freezing … distribution to schools, institutions and food pantries as well as /Creates local Jobs…Volunteers are available…partnerships are formed.funding available through grants and local fund raising…gardens at soup kitchens and community areas …. Distribution…. A truck with advertising on the sides that delivers food to pantries and schools and stops for people to shop at certain locations..municipal compost …gathering together in small groups for cooking lessons and sharing a meal… Children cook a meal and bring it home to the parents ..parents learn to cook..Food Demos…..soup kitchens that are about building community and dignity for all….tailgate markets for produce… open space lands used by farmers to grow fresh food.. Ulster community collage … supporting our farmers by buying food, planting a row or the hungry and the school… Queens Galley kitchen serves so many meals..people are doing amazing things… pr is necessary…documentation and pictures.. location for storage of food … community centers and food pantries with gardens…people are willing to help build gardens…volunteers are available… businesses are willing to help….centers… distribution… Local growing and exchange of foods….gleaning… Education and community celebration

New event: Catskill Animal Sanctuary is having a spring clean up on Saturday, April 10th, 10-4:30. Roll up your sleeves on behalf of our animal friends. We’ll be painting, landscaping, raking and more. Lunch provided by our fabulous chef Kevin Archer, so come hungry!
