In 1996, WSW began the Chili Bowl to bring the community together and to highlight some of the incredible work being made in our studios. Now, 22 years later, the Chili Bowl Fiesta has become a staple in the town of Rosendale. After all, there’s no better cure for the winter blues than a plentiful scoop of chili in a brand-new, handmade bowl.
In 22 years, we’ve also outgrown a few spaces, and this year the event will be hosted in the dining hall at Ulster County Community College – just five minutes away from the Workshop!
In addition to having some space to move, this year’s Fiesta guests will enjoy live entertainment by In The Kitchen, raffle drawings, and the satisfaction of supporting local arts. Plus, they’ll put their new wares to use with a complementary serving of delicious, piping hot chili.
More than 20 Hudson Valley restaurants and chefs donate 50+ gallons of chili, satisfying meat-lovers, vegans, and vegetarians alike. Guests can also buy a paper bowl, and bottomless bellies can purchase additional servings.
Nearly 1,000 handmade bowls, mugs, and tumblers are created throughout the year by staff, interns, resident artists, students, and local potters. Because so many hands contribute to this process, each vessel is one-of-a-kind, and widely varied in shape, size, color, surface design, and, of course, price-point ($10-$100). Guests always have a blast looking for the perfect pieces!
Ceramics Studio Manager Ruth McKinney Burket says that ultimately, “This project is about way more than just making a whole bunch of bowls and making money. It’s about bringing people together. I think that’s a part of who we are as Women’s Studio Workshop, as a community.”

WSW volunteers are essential and can be engaged in all kinds of interesting activities: helping at our Chili Bowl Fiesta, working on the ArtFarm, assisting in artist’s book production, or working on administrative tasks in the office.
