This has been a dramatic and busy week here at the Community Center. On Tuesday we established the Center as a drop off point for supplies, food and clothing for those who were devastated by Hurricane Irene. To date we have amassed a sizable collection of clothing, paper goods and non-perishable food items. They are here for people to come get, and we are also ferrying things to where they are most needed. A valiant volunteer drove diapers ,baby wipes and children’s clothing to Plattesville.
However, it turned out that what we have that was most essential to those left without electricity is our computer center and our internet access. The Center has been full of people using the wi-fi to connect with the outer world, often after days without any contact. The joy on the faces of teens as they discovered that they could get on line here is indescribable. So, while others have been doing valiant work literally in the trenches, we feel we are serving a real need and have become the coolest Internet Cafe in the Catskills. We will stay open throughout this weekend and every day next week from 10-5 to continue providing this service. (it comes with coffee, cool drinks and cookies).
Most of our classes have continued in spite of adverse conditiions. Scrabble on Mondays at 6 T’ai Chi on Wednesday nights at 6, Our wonderful Zumba teacher Doris Nieves called to say that although her home is destroyed, she will offer free Zumba classes on Thursday nights at 6:30 and Zumba Gold for seniors on Fridays at 9 am throughout the month of September.
We are planning a Community Supper on Sunday night at 5 pm. for anyone who wants to spent time with good food and good friends. Bring a dish if you wish, but most importantly, just come and be together as a community.
We are still collecting items for those left in need, but right now we’d like to ask you to send school supplies, sanitary products ( pads, tampons, incontinence items), wipes, etc.
We need volunteers to help us sort through the donations we’ve received, to help out at the Community Supper and to help distribute the donations to where they are most needed. Please be in touch. At times like these, our greatest need is for Community.
