The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. federal holiday, January 20, 2014, is a perfect opportunity for Americans to honor Dr. King’s legacy through service. The MLK Day of Service empowers individuals, strengthens communities, bridges barriers, creates solutions to social problems, and moves us closer to Dr. King’s vision of a beloved community.

Bard’s 4th Annual Civic Engagement Day

Bard’s 3rd Annual Civic Engagement Day is scheduled to coincide with the national Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service on January 20th, 2014, and every Bard first-year will partake in the event. The goal is to work with community partners to engage pressing societal needs related to issues of poverty, sustainability, education, and senior citizens. We hope that first-years will learn something about themselves and about the surrounding community- something that we hope encourages them to regularly connect deeply with that community. On January 18th and 20th 2014, we are hoping to advance preparedness in communities. We want to build outreach to all segments and reduce the level of fire incidents as well as increase awareness in vulnerable neighborhoods about making a plan for emergencies. Our plan is to reach as many homes as possible with door hangers. Our volunteers will travel in pairs throughout Kingston and Poughkeepsie, putting the door hangers on as many homes as possible in the neighborhood they’re designated. The volunteers will be provided with fire safety information before going out, in order to answer any questions that residents may have. More info or call (518) 694-5173

At the Repair Cafe you’ll find tools and materials to help you make the repair you need: on furniture, small appliances & housewares, clothes, crockery,toys and more. You’ll also find “repair coaches” such as electricians, seamstresses, mechanics and all-purpose fix-it pros to get you started and help along the way. More info

All participants should be 16 years or older. We could also accommodate a couple of 14 – 15 year olds as well. They are not allowed to use tools but can paint or help clean. Participants should wear sturdy shoes, long sleeves, an extra sweater/sweatshirt and clothes they can get dirty. Teens up to 18 years old need a parent or guardian to co-sign our waiver form. Participants can sign their waivers in advance. They are available on our website at ulsterhabitat.org .

Collection Drive
The Ulster County Human Rights Commission is encouraging the citizens of Ulster County to honor the legacy of Dr. King by distributing toiletries, paper products, disposable diapers, and other basic needs items which cannot be purchased with food stamps (suggested – toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, diapers, razors, deodorant, any cleaning or personal hygiene supplies). The Hodge Community Center (15-21 Franklin Street, Kingston) will serve as a drop-off location throughout the day’s trainings (9am-3pm) listed above.

Caring Hands Soup Kitchen

SUNY Ulster “I Have A Dream Week”

We will host a “Pocket Change for Peace” drive, with all proceeds to benefit MLK Center for Non-Violent Social Change. We will broadcast Dr. King’s speech in the dining hall on Wednesday, January 22 at 12pm.
