Runners of all ages Share the Scare in UlsterCorps Annual Zombie Escape!
Rosendale, NY —- “On Oct. 26th at the 4th annual UlsterCorps Service Sprint, over one hundred and sixty runners age two to sixty-five ran for their lives through the spooky woods, tunnels and caves of Williams Lake surrounded by spectacular fall foliage. Runners were given the opportunity to participate in the “Zombie Escape” donning flag football belts and dodging volunteer zombies from the Kingston Boys and Girls Club and Rondout High School. Runners who made it to the finish with their brains intact and a flag on their belt earned an UlsterCorps Zombie Response Team certification card.
All proceeds from the run benefitted UlsterCorps, a countywide resource hub for volunteerism, collaboration and service with a deep commitment to engaging high school and college age students. UlsterCorps partners with schools, civic and religious organizations, other nonprofit agencies and business volunteer programs to help them provide services to county residents.
Kaia Adams, age 6, of Rosendale, NY was the youngest 5k finisher. Her mom, Hensley Adams, wrote: Kaia ran her first 5K race today. Took us 58 minutes but she finished it. Around the end of mile 2 we had a chance to cut off the last mile, I asked her if she wanted to head back or finish the race, and she said “Mom, I at least want to TRY to finish it.” She ran the last 1/4 mile, once she could see we were close she got a second wind. photo: Kellie McGuire

The critters won the day in the costume department, with Best Costume Award going to Christopher Regan for his fantastic dog costume; Best Group Costume went to The Fraidy Cats Hensley Evans, Kaia Adams and Kellie McGuire. The Team Spirit Award went to Team “Don’t Get Bit” who, with some serious team muscle, managed to get two baby joggers down some gnarly single track. Volunteer Spirit Award went to volunteer Race Director Steve Schallenkamp of Shawangunk Runners.
The fun began with a Monster Mash Warmup led by Cyndy Borzumato-Cobb, accompanied by DJ Silas Cutler-Lockshon of Peak Entertainment DJ and MC Services. The 1K kids fun run kicked off at 11am – they all made it across the finish line with smiles. Peak Entertainment entertained everyone by spinning spooky tunes while all participants enjoyed treats from Bodacious Bagels, Deisings Bakery, New Paltz Bagels, Jenkins & Lueken Orchards, The Bakery and Wightman Fruit Farm.

Laura Conklin, program director at the Kingston Boys and Girls Club, remarked: “The kids truly enjoyed being zombies, they’re already hyped for next year, watch out!”
