UlsterCorps Celebrates Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service –
January 18, 2010
Rosendale, NY, December 29, 2009 – Martin Luther King Jr., Day has been transformed from a holiday into a national day of community service grounded in Dr. King’s teachings of nonviolence and social justice. A list of open houses, volunteer training sessions, and other service events can be found on UlsterCorps’ website: www.ulstercorps.org or at UlsterCorps’ storefront at 292 Main Street in Rosendale, which will be open from 10am-3pm Monday January 18th to assist volunteers in finding local service opportunities and follow-up at the end of the day. Coffee and refreshments donated by generous local businesses including the Alternative Baker will be served.
The aim is to make the holiday a day ON (not off), where people of all ages and backgrounds come together to improve lives, bridge social barriers, and move our nation closer to the “Beloved Community†that Dr. King envisioned. Dr. King Jr. once said “Life’s most urgent and persistent question is: What are you doing for others?†and devoted his life to advancing equality, social justice, and opportunity for all.
UlsterCorps, created in early 2009, is a countywide resource, working with community service agencies to encourage the use of volunteers, facilitate successful volunteer placements, and nurture collaborations among service organizations throughout Ulster County.
