Save Them Now is seeking 1 to 3 new board members, including a treasurer. Keeping our books is pretty simple at this point, but someone needs to do it. Our treasurer just took a job over by the Connecticut border, so he’s no longer going to be available. The board of directors meets once a month and is in close contact via email. We are working on a host of interesting issues — from administering the two grants we’ve won, to fundraising, deepening our ties with various stakeholders, and formulating a strategic plan.
Volunteers also are needed to speak on various life skills issues at the program’s twice monthly house meetings and serve as mentors.
Save Them Now, celebrating its second year of operation in Feb. 2009, provides transitional housing to Ulster County men returning from incarceration or long term treatment programs. Located on Washington Avenue next to Queens Galley, the program currently houses 12 men with funding from state and county sources. The Board of Directors meets monthly at New Progressive Baptist Church in the Rondout area of Kingston, which helped found STN in 2007. STN does not accept sex offenders. In 2009, STN will launch a carpentry program at the former Ulster County Jail, with a grant from Assemblymember Kevin Cahill. The program also has received a NYS Dept of Environmental Justice grant to train 10 men as residential energy auditors.
