Saturday May 10, 2014
Thank you to everyone who donated to the 2014 Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive! And to the amazing team of postal workers and volunteers who helped collect, sort and distribute 11,865 lb of donations to 24 Ulster County food pantries.
Always the 2nd Saturday of May, Food Drive volunteers help sort, pack, and distribute food to local food pantries throughout the county.
On Saturday, May 10, 2014, in conjunction with the National Association of Letter Carriers and the United States Postal Service, the United Way of Ulster County, UlsterCorps, and the Kingston Post Office are coordinating a countywide food drive to collect food for local food pantries.
“Food pantries are still seeing record numbers of clients,” says Su Marcy, United Way Vice President. “Going into the summer season is a challenge for families with children home from school who would normally take advantage of school meal programs. As a result, pantries traditionally see an increase in demand over the summer months,” she said. Last year’s record-breaking food drive brought in 16,500 pounds of food that was distributed to 20 food pantries throughout Ulster County. This year’s goal is to collect 20,000 pounds of food.
You can help “Stamp Out Hunger” by leaving non-perishable food items such as pasta, dry milk, peanut butter cereal, and canned fruit – meat – vegetables (please NO glass), for your letter carrier on Saturday, May 10th or by bringing donations to your local post office beginning Monday, May 5th.Food pantries wishing to participate must contact Beth McLendon, UlsterCorps at 845-481-0331 prior to May 10th.
