10 Years of Youth Recognition
(Kingston) – Ulster County Executive Michael Hein announces the winners of
the 10 th Annual Youth Recognition event. This year thirty individuals are
being honored at the Ulster County Youth Board’s annual event being held on
May 27, 2010 at Honors Haven in Ellenville.
“It makes me very proud to honor so many of Ulster County’s youth.†said
County Executive Hein. “I am confident that these impressive individuals
will carry on the tradition of excellence they have established at such a
young age for years to come. Whether it is overcoming adversity, living
healthy or leading their peers this year’s awardees have demonstrated a
will to make Ulster County a better place to live.â€
Three youth being recognized for Overcoming Difficult Odds include Aliyah
Lewis of Saugerties for keeping an open heart for family and friends,
Cheyanne Riley of Saugerties for showing great resilience despite personal
loss and Cherokee Lindsay from Kingston as a resonant voice of artistic
determination and passion.
The three youth being recognized for Meaningful Community Involvement
included Heather Warg of Kerhonkson for fostering a lifelong passion for
animals, the arts and leadership, Elizabeth Warg of Kerhonkson for stepping
beyond oneself for the sake of dachshund rescue and Tyler Downes of West
Hurley for saving lives and buildings in emergency situations.
This year’s Healthy Living award is being presented to Jovanie Costa of
Marlboro for the use of track goals in total self improvement and
Kquandehjia Davis of Kingston for demonstrating the impact of determination
and giving.
The Peer Leadership award, otherwise known as the ORVIL award, is presented
annually to a group of youth making a difference. This year, the award was
presented to the members of Girl Scout Troop #60063 for their work to
establish the Port Ewen Food Pantry. The Girl Scouts honored this year
included Kayla LaManna, Kelli Castaldo, Mariah Johnston, Shawna Smith,
Evgeniya Malinoski, and Michaela Henn
The Youth Board continued its recognition of the graduating members of the
Ulster County Youth Court program. They included Katie Ehmann, Brandon
Paton, Chelsea Herrington, Jessica Region, Kevin Kurtz, Anna Marie Raush,
Zal Mirza, Margaret Ryan, Hannah Sterrs, Anam Khan, and Evan D’Auge
The community asset builder adult being recognized this year is Thomas
Kelly of Kingston for his ability to grow and guide the local Catholic
Youth Organization activities.
Hannaford’s Supermarkets continued it’s commitment to Ulster County youth
as the primary sponsor of the event. Individual award sponsors include
Stewart’s Shops, Stop-DWI of Ulster County, and Ulster Savings Bank. Other
businesses supporting this event included Timely Signs of Kingston as well
as Brown’s Florist, Barnes and Noble Booksellers, and Kingston Fine Jewelry
of Lake Katrine.
Since 2000, the Ulster County Youth Board has recognized 225 youth, 19
adults and nine businesses throughout Ulster County at this annual Youth
Recognition Event.
